The original colours used by Haida artists were Black, Red and Blue-Green. The black came primarily from lignite and also from graphite or charcoal. The Red came intitially from ochers and sometimes cinnabar, and after trading began, also from chinese vermilion. Blue-Green was probably derived from copper minerals. Double headed eagle lends itself nicely to the circular design.
